Have you considered the sinister side to brilliant Black Friday deals?
In a recent conversation with Security Brief, Martin Jakobsen, Managing Director of Cybanetix, offered his observations on how bad actors target both retailers’ infrastructure and consumers during this busy time of year. With limited time to address attacks, some retailers choose to set up entire temporary operations centers, aiming to minimise disruption to consumers and thereby protect revenue. With only a short window for retailers to generate a large portion of their annual income, many want to maximise every opportunity and cannot risk losing valuable time to an attack.
‘Working with retail and online retail, we have seen many attempts for malicious groups to hit retailers in their most critical trading period. We have clients which make close to 20% of their annual revenue in the Black Friday period, whereby focus on service continuity is borderline manic. This mode of operation is akin to the old mafia protection racket, but instead of burning down a store, they take down an online retailer.’
